The United Kingdom is preparing to introduce fresh measures that are likely to prohibit Nigerian students and students of other nationalities studying in the UK from bringing their families along.
In an exclusive report by The Sun UK, it is revealed that this crackdown will be announced during the course of this week.
Under these new regulations, all master’s students and several other postgraduates will be barred from bringing their families to the UK.
However, the restriction will not be applicable to PhD students, who are typically highly skilled and undergo courses lasting between 3 and 5 years, as stated by the UK media outlet.
This development comes in light of reports indicating a substantial surge in net migration to the UK, reaching a staggering 1 million.
Tory Members of Parliament have urged Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take control of the escalating figures. To tackle the rising numbers, UK ministers are expected to declare the implementation of an immigration clampdown on either Tuesday or Wednesday.
The Sun reports that Rishi Sunak is anticipated to vigorously address the issue of immigration, highlighting that these figures are inherited from data up until December 2022, two months after he assumed office as Prime Minister.
The article further states, “There has been a significant rise in the number of individuals entering Britain by exploiting their relatives’ student visas. Last year, students brought 135,788 family members to the country, a staggering nine-fold increase compared to 2019.
Notably, Nigerian students accounted for 59,053 individuals who brought over 60,923 relatives.” Concerned about the situation, a Tory MP conveyed to The Sun on Sunday, “We have to take control of this situation.”
