UNILAG Debunk False Reports of Additional School Fee Increase, Maintains Fee Structure

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has unequivocally denied recent claims circulating in certain media outlets alleging a secondary hike in tuition fees following the adjustment made in July.

Addressing the matter, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the Head of the Communication Unit at UNILAG, issued a statement on Friday night in Lagos.
Mrs. Alaga-Ibraheem categorically stated that the information in question is not only untrue but also misleading, emphasizing that it misrepresents the actual situation. She acknowledged that UNILAG is cognizant of the existing economic conditions, but she clarified that no additional notice regarding fee increments has been issued.

In her words, “UNILAG wishes to explicitly refute unsubstantiated claims making the rounds that the institution has slammed additional unauthorised charges to its earlier increments. This is a completely untrue and misleading claim and a misrepresentation of facts, aimed at misinforming the public into believing that there has been another adjustment of fees.”

Mrs. Alaga-Ibraheem further explained that beyond the recently updated mandatory fees for new and returning undergraduates, as conveyed through the university’s Information Flash news bulletin, no further fee alterations have been made.

Recalling that UNILAG had initially announced the fee adjustment in July, reports highlighted that this modification was intended to come into effect during the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic session. UNILAG justified the decision by citing the prevailing economic conditions and the imperative to fulfill its commitments to students, staff, and other stakeholders.

Breaking down the fee structure, it was revealed that new undergraduate students without laboratory/studio fees were expected to pay N126,325 for one academic session. Meanwhile, courses with laboratory and studio fees carried mandatory charges of N176,325 per academic session.

Returning students were also subject to fees in line with the course structure: N100,750 for those without laboratory/studio and N140,250 for those requiring laboratory and studio facilities.
