The U.S. has released its updated list of 40 countries allowed for visa-free travel in 2025, but the U.K. and all African nations like Nigeria and South Africa didn’t make the cut. Romania is the only new country added this year. While the U.K. can still join under special rules, most of the list stays the same, focusing on nations with strong security ties to the U.S.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) lets travelers visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa, but they must apply online for approval (called ESTA) first. U.S. officials said the 2025 rules now include stricter safety checks and updated policies to keep borders secure. “You can still apply for a regular visa if you want,” they added.

The new list aims to make travel easier for millions but leaves out Africa entirely. Popular destinations like France, Japan, and Germany are included, along with newcomers Romania. The full list covers 40 countries, from Australia and Chile to Qatar and South Korea, but no African nations qualify this year.
