VIRGIL VAN DIJK WINS AWARD FOR BEST DEFENDER AND UEFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The UEFA Champions league draw for the 2019/20 season has been concluded as European giants get to know their opponents for the most prestigious football competition in the world. The draw was held in Monaco at the Grimaldi Forum on Thursday.

Cristiano Ronaldo will make a return to the city of Madrid as Juventus are drawn with Atletico after both teams faced each other in the second round last season with the Portuguese star scoring a hat-trick in the second leg after losing the first leg 2-0 at Wanda Metropolitano.

Awards were also dished out at the event with Alisson Becker winning the Best goalkeeper, Virgil Van Dijk was given the Best defender award, the best midfielder was given to Frenkie de Jong, while the award for the best forward was given to Lionel Messi.

Virgil Van Dijk also won the UEFA player of the year award.

The defending champions Liverpool are in Group E and will face Napoli, Salzburg and Genk.
