Zamfara Governor accuses EFCC chairman of soliciting $2 million bribe

Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, has alleged that Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sought a bribe of $2 million from him. In an interview with BBC Hausa, Matawalle voiced his concerns, further intensifying the growing discord between him and the EFCC boss.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the governor called for Bawa’s resignation, stating that the chairman should address corruption-related inquiries.

In response, the EFCC Chairman denied any wrongdoing, asserting his willingness to cooperate and urging Matawalle to present any evidence to the appropriate authorities.

During the interview, Matawalle emphasized that the blame should not be solely directed at governors, as the federal government also holds a significant treasury. He questioned the actions of the EFCC boss towards federal officials, challenging him to reveal evidence against them if he claims to possess such information.

The governor confidently declared, “I have evidence against him. Let him vacate office, and within seconds, numerous individuals will come forward with proof of bribes he has accepted.”

Matawalle alleged that Bawa had requested the bribe during a meeting held at a specific location, which the governor declined to disclose.
Matawalle’s accusations against the EFCC Chairman have further complicated their already strained relationship.

As the situation unfolds, the call for transparency and accountability in matters of corruption resonates strongly, demanding thorough investigation and appropriate actions.
