Britain’s Mrs May ends a successful African tour despite controversy

British Prime Minister Theresa May has just ended a successful three-nation African tour despite controversy over her remarks in South Africa about the poverty level in Nigeria.

Mrs May echoed an American Brookings Institute finding, published recently, that there were more poor people in Nigeria than in any other country including India.

Nigerian federal authorities had challenged the American report calling it “fake news”.

Despite the Controversy, Mrs May was warmly received by President Buhari in Abuja. Among matters she discussed with Buhari were trade, security and human trafficking.

Following the Abuja talks, Britain is to provide training for some Nigerian Security personnel.

Mrs May’s African tour is part of efforts to fashion new trading links post-Brexit.

Britain will try to use its development Aid budget to forge stronger trade links with African nations – in competition with China.
