Calm continues to reign in Harare and other urban centres, despite opposition candidate Nelson Chinamasa’s rejection of the Constitutional Courts confirmation of President Mnangagwa’s reelection as President.
Chinamasa vows to fight on. But reports say national police are in full alert to deal with any repeated riots.
Mnangagwa’s inauguration ceremony in a packed Harare stadium was well attended by political leaders across Southern Africa – a remarkable show of solidarity. The roll call included the Presidents of South Africa, Rwanda, and Angola.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special envoy also held talks with President Mnangagwa to ‘broaden and deepen close bilateral relations’.
At press time, it was not clear whether opposition leaders Chinanmasa would respond positively to Mnangawa’s reconciliation offer to promote national unity.
Meanwhile, Mnangawa must address a full plate of pressing problems -measures to counter the extension if American economic sanctions; measures to foster international business confidence and promote direct foreign investments in the vital sectors of mining, agriculture, and tourism; initiatives to end the long queues at Zimbabwean banks of cash strapped citizens, who transact business in five major currencies instead of a Zimbabwean currency.
