US President, Biden advocates peaceful and transparent Nigerian elections

Joe Biden, the president of the United States, has said that Nigerians should have a chance to vote in peaceful and credible general elections in 2023.

Biden made the call via his official Twitter handle, urging all candidates to honor the results of the election and support a peaceful transition.

“All Nigerians ought to have the opportunity to select their new leader through a free, just, open, peaceful process.

He tweeted on Thursday, “As election day nears, I urge the political parties and candidates to live up to their promise to respect the results of the election and support a peaceful transition.”

The position taken by diplomatic missions in a previous joint statement was reiterated in Biden’s message.

We urge parties to adhere to electoral laws and institutions and to take a firm stance against their supporters’ violence and hate speech. They stated, “We ask Nigeria’s security services to do everything in their power to safeguard that procedure and prevent and deter attacks on INEC facilities, materials, and personnel.”

The diplomatic missions said they are fully committed to supporting all efforts to ensure that the Nigerian people decide who wins the election, despite applauding the signing of the second Peace Accord by the candidates of parties competing in the upcoming presidential election.

They stated that the process’s fairness, credibility, and safety are essential for Nigeria’s stability and democratic consolidation.
