Ahmed Lawan takes over the Yobe North Senate seat

The election for senator representing Yobe North in Yobe State has been won by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The Independent National Electoral Commission officially declared Lawan the winner on Sunday night, stating that he received 91,318 votes, or 74.7 percent of the 122,193 valid votes, to defeat Bello Ilu of the People’s Democratic Party, who received 22,849 votes.

Lawan has won seven elections to the National Assembly in a row since 1999. The first two of these elections gave him a ticket to the House of Representatives, and the last five gave him a ticket to the Senate.

It should be recalled that Lawan lost to the PDP at his polling place in Katuzu Primary School polling unit 001B, Gashua. There, he received 114 votes, while the PDP senatorial candidate received 219, the New Nigeria Peoples Party received 11 votes, the African Democratic Congress received one vote, and five invalid votes were recorded.

Additionally, Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, received 107 votes in his polling unit, while Atiku Abubakar, the PDP candidate, won with 186 votes.

on Monday, February 6, 2023, a five-member Supreme Court panel confirmed Lawan as the APC senatorial candidate for Yobe North, replacing Bashir Machina, who won the party ticket in the primary elections on May 28.
