Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, continues to mesmerize the international literary scene with her masterful storytelling and thought-provoking narratives. In a moment of triumph, Adichie’s latest work, titled “Notes on Grief,” has been bestowed with the esteemed Best Title of the Summer award at the 2023 Indie Book Awards.
The announcement took place on June 23, the penultimate day of Independent Bookshop Week (IBW), where Adichie clinched the Non-Fiction prize with her book, “Notes on Grief,” published by Fourth Estate. This work is a poignant meditation on the loss of her father.
Mel Griffin, chairman of the judging panel, expressed their thoughts on selecting Adichie’s book, stating, “Chairing the 2023 Indie Book Awards was a privilege, and the entire panel agreed that this year’s shortlists were particularly outstanding, making the decision-making process quite challenging. However, we ultimately and unanimously chose ‘Notes on Grief’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as the winner in the non-fiction category.”
“This beautifully crafted essay conveys a profound message within its concise pages, and we found its impact to be extraordinary. Although centered around one individual’s experience of grief, we felt it would resonate with many, transcending culture and circumstances. One judge even described the reading experience as ‘cathartic,'” added Griffin.

The Next Generation Indie Book Awards, now in its seventeenth year, stands as the largest international awards program for indie authors and independent publishers. Established to acknowledge and honor the most remarkable independently published books across over 80 different categories each year, the award is presented by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group in cooperation with Marilyn Allen of Allen Literary Agency (formerly the Allen O’Shea Literary Agency).
