The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Abia State has expressed deep concern regarding the pervasive problem of drug abuse within the state. Speaking during the commemoration of the 2023 International Day Against Substance Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking, Mr. Dogo Yusuf, the Commander of NDLEA in Abia, highlighted the distressing situation by pointing to the long queue of individuals awaiting admission at NDLEA’s rehabilitation center in Aba.
Under the global theme of “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention,” Yusuf emphasized that the sheer number of victims seeking rehabilitation had overwhelmed the capacity of the center in Aba. He attributed this scarcity of space as evidence of the alarmingly high prevalence of drug abuse in Abia State. He further implored the residents of Abia to shun stigmatization and extend their support to those already grappling with drug-related issues, helping them find their way back to a normal and healthy life.
Yusuf highlighted the urgent need for the community to assist the agency in eradicating the stigmatization and discrimination faced by drug abuse victims. Over the years, he observed that the stigma associated with drug abuse had deterred individuals from seeking the necessary help. Stressing that drug abuse victims are human beings deserving of dignity, understanding, empathy, and support, Yusuf emphasized the importance of creating an environment where they feel secure, respected, and encouraged to seek treatment.
While reiterating the message conveyed by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, Yusuf urged the people of Abia to stand united in dismantling the barriers of stigma that hinder victims from seeking assistance. He emphasized that combating prejudices and stereotypes and promoting acceptance would cultivate a society that embraces victims on their journey to recovery.
In addition to the challenges faced by the agency, Yusuf acknowledged the Abia Command’s achievements in effectively prosecuting and convicting drug criminals. Despite the logistical constraints, he appealed for assistance in the areas of logistics and vehicle donations, highlighting the need for reliable transportation to reach affected areas in the fight against drug abuse within the community.
