Former President Donald Trump has declared his intention to reintroduce an expanded travel ban, surpassing its previous scope, targeting travelers from predominantly Muslim nations if he wins the presidential election next year. Trump made this announcement during his first public address of the 2024 presidential campaign in Council Bluffs, Iowa, as reported by CBS.
The initial implementation of the travel ban encountered significant legal hurdles, but the third iteration of the restriction received validation from the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision in 2018.
The ban originally restricted entry to the United States for individuals from five predominantly Muslim countries, alongside North Korea and Venezuela. However, President Joe Biden signed an executive order during his first week in office, overturning the ban.
During his address, Trump emphasized the effectiveness of extreme vetting and the travel ban during his administration, asserting that they successfully prevented radical Islamic terrorists and jihadists from entering the country.
He stated, “Under the Trump administration, we imposed extreme vetting and put on a powerful travel ban to keep radical Islamic terrorists and jihadists out of our country. Well, how did that work out? We had no problem, right? They knew they couldn’t come here if they had that moniker. They couldn’t come here.”
Trump further emphasized his commitment to national security, promising an even more extensive and robust travel ban if he regains the presidency. He stated, “When I return to office, the travel ban is coming back even bigger than before and much stronger than before. We don’t want people blowing up our shopping centers.
We don’t want people blowing up our cities, and we don’t want people stealing our farms. So it’s not gonna happen.”
