Nigeria Labour Congress Asserts Right to Peaceful Rallies Amid Controversial Court Order

In a letter to the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) firmly asserted that no court order, interim or otherwise, restrains Nigerian workers from participating in peaceful rallies convened by the Congress.

The NLC also reminded the government of a subsisting judgment emphasizing the public interest in exercising the right to demonstrate and protest on matters of concern, provided no wrongful acts are committed.

The letter comes ahead of an organized protest by the Labour Centre on Wednesday, August 2, addressing the removal of petrol subsidy and the resulting hardship on Nigerians.

The NLC urges peaceful demonstrations and calls on the Nigeria Police Force to comply with the Police Establishment Act 2020 to ensure security during the rallies.
