The Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has taken decisive action by suspending Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, its presidential candidate in the February 25 election, due to alleged anti-party activities. In addition to the suspension of Kwankwaso, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has also been suspended.
During a special general assembly at Rockview Hotels in Apapa, party members held a voice vote to approve these suspensions, which are set to last for six months. The NNPP’s actions stem from accusations of Kwankwaso engaging in unauthorized political dealings with President Bola Tinubu, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Dr. Agbo Major has been appointed as the acting National Chairman, while Mr. Ogini Olaposi assumes the role of acting National Secretary, accompanied by 18 others in various national officer positions.
Addressing the media after the assembly, Babayo Muhammed Abdulahi, the Secretary of the BoT, stated that Kwankwaso’s suspension was a result of verified evidence indicating his involvement in anti-party activities and unauthorized political discussions with other candidates. This move has led to Kwankwaso losing his status as the NNPP’s national leader.
The NNPP’s actions have also invalidated the pre-election Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Kwankwasia Movement, The National Movement, and National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF).
The newly appointed acting chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, expressed the party’s commitment to healing divisions within its ranks caused by the suspended NWC members. He emphasized the party’s people-oriented ideology and extended an invitation to all displaced members to return.
The special general assembly meeting, attended by the new NWC and members from across the nation, marks a significant development in the NNPP’s efforts to restructure and refocus its political direction.
