Former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the importance of avoiding conditions that might lead to military coups in Africa. He made this statement during a meeting with a group of youths from the ‘Africa for Africa Youth Initiative’ (A4A) at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.
Obasanjo expressed concern over the increasing instances of military coups in Africa, suggesting that they indicate public dissatisfaction with their countries’ situations and a desire for change. Despite his personal experience under the rule of late Military dictator General Sanni Abacha, Obasanjo firmly stated that he would not support a coup.
He called upon governments across African nations, including Nigeria, to adopt policies that prevent young people from considering military takeovers as a solution. Obasanjo stated, “We should make sure that we do everything to prevent coups from happening.” He highlighted the role of youth in supporting such actions and urged governments to provide alternatives that address their concerns.
Obasanjo also called on African leaders who cling to power indefinitely to consider retirement, emphasizing the importance of democracy that values integrity, honesty, character, inclusivity, and an absence of marginalization or favoritism.
Furthermore, he encouraged African youths to take active leadership roles, as waiting for a better tomorrow might be futile. The Director of the Africa for Africa Youth Initiative, Henry Akasisli, noted that their visit to Obasanjo had inspired them to work towards elevating the African continent, highlighting Africa’s vast resources and the intelligence of its young population.
