FIFA Bans Former Spanish Football Association President for Inappropriate Post-Win Kiss

The former president of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, has been handed a three-year ban by FIFA. The decision comes in response to an incident that occurred during the Women’s World Cup trophy presentation in August, where Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso without her consent.

This act led to Rubiales’ provisional suspension for 90 days, which ultimately culminated in his resignation. Additionally, he received a restraining order that prohibits him from approaching Hermoso within 200 meters.

FIFA’s official statement, issued on Monday morning, stated, “Former Spanish Football Association president Luis Rubiales is banned from all football-related activities for three years, as he violated article 13 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.”

Mr. Rubiales still maintains his innocence and is currently under criminal investigation in Spain. It is worth noting that Spain has instituted the ‘Only Yes is Yes’ law since last year, classifying non-consensual acts, such as the one in question, as sexual assault. Rubiales has the option to request a motivated decision within ten days, and the case remains subject to potential appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.

FIFA has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to preserving the integrity and dignity of all individuals while upholding the principles of proper conduct.
