Liberia’s President Weah Makes Football History

Liberia’s President Weah, who was the 1996 World Footballer of the Year, made history again last week when he participated in an international friendly against Nigeria. At 51, he became the oldest player to have participated in a football match, according to football statisticians.

Liberia arranged the Monrovia friendly to retire their number 14 shirt, won by Weah in his playing days.
There are many legends spun around George Weah at the peak of his career, like one about starting from his side’s goal post, dribbling past all the opposition players and past the other side’s goal keeper to score.

The prayer now is that he can dribble past all Liberia’s legacy problems- pot-holed roads, little electricity and scarce potable water – to create a new republic worthy of the dreams of the ex-slaves who founded it in the 19th century. Amen.

Amuneke, aside from being the head coach of Tanzania national team, the TAIFA STARS also supervices all other Tanzania age-group national teams.
