The corruption board of the Central African country has announced that a fine of over $160million has been issued to the local mobile telecom companies of Orange and MTN after both parties failed to pay taxes ion games and gambling services.
After running a probe on the sector, it led to fines in the total sum of $283 million. Other companies including Viettel and Camtel were also found to have violated the regulations.
The amount paid by each company was not clear and the companies were not immediately available for comment.
Orange and MTN were accused of not paying taxes on their money transfer system known as Mobile money.
The report is a major blow for MTN, a company that is contesting a $3.9billion fine in Nigeria for failing to disconnect unregistered simcards which could be used for criminal activities.
