119 Inmates Escape Amid Facility Damage in Suleja, Niger State

A jailbreak occurred at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state, as 119 inmates fled following severe damage caused by heavy rainfall on Wednesday night.

Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory FCT Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service NCoS, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Thursday morning.

“The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state, suffered extensive damage due to hours of heavy downpour on Wednesday night, leading to the escape of 118 inmates as sections of the facility, including its perimeter fence, were compromised,” Duza stated.

In response, the Correctional Service swiftly activated recapture efforts, collaborating with other security agencies. As of now, 10 fleeing inmates have been apprehended, with efforts ongoing to recapture the remaining escapees.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by aging correctional facilities, Duza emphasized ongoing initiatives to modernize infrastructure. This includes the construction of six 3000-capacity ultra-modern custodial centres across Nigeria and the renovation of existing facilities.

Despite the escape, the Correctional Service reassured the public of its control over the situation, urging citizens to carry on with their daily activities without fear. Additionally, the public was urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to authorities.

The incident underscores the pressing need for modernization within Nigeria’s correctional system, as efforts continue to enhance security measures and facility standards across the country.
